THE new Finnish Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, Pasi Patokallio presented his credentials to Governor-General Sir Michael Ogio yesterday in Port Moresby.
He said PNG and Finland shared a common belief in democracy, a rule of law and good governance even though they were geographically far from each other. He said as sovereign and responsible members of the international community, Finland and PNG worked actively at the United Nations and other international conferences. “As a member of the European Union, Finland is engaged with Papua New Guinea in its cooperation with the union in the strategic sectors of sustainable rural development, human resource development, governance, trade, humanitarian aid and risk reduction,” Patokallio said. “Bilaterally, Finland, through my embassy, is engaging in a small way in helping to mitigate the impact of climate change for the inhabitants of Carteret Islands in Bougainville as well as in helping the Ginigoada Business Development to train young people in Port Moresby. “Finland strongly believes the most durable route to development is to engage in international trade.” Patokallio said PNG had ample economic potential which was being increasingly recognised by Finnish companies. He said power generation and environmentally sustainable mining and land use were two areas in which Finnish companies excelled. “Finland and PNG have a solid foundation for mutual benefit and much untapped potential. It is my wish and intention to help strengthen our friendly ties and cooperation even further, especially in the economic field,” he said. Sir Michael said Finland had made significant efforts to maintain and support sustainable development and to fight against climate change which was a critical issue to the small island states in the Pacific region.
