National Government Departments and Business houses owed a total of K200 million in unpaid electricity bills to PNG Power. And the Defence Force tops the list with six million kina followed by Correctional Services Institute with almost two- million kina and the Court House with less than one-million kina. Minister responsible, Ben Micah said the Finance Department will effectively take over the bill payments, under the current State of Emergency for PNG Power, to ensure the huge debt is paid back: "The government itself is the biggest culprit. There are many government departments and agencies that hardly pay their bills for months and months, some even years. So instruction has been given to the secretary for finance and the lawful direction under my powers, all government departments from now, your bills will be paid directly to PNG Power.Because you budget for those bills in your budgets every year, but you never pay for the bills, you use the money for something else.So this time, finance will pay straight to PNG Power so that your lights will be on, your lifts will be working and you can continue to drink your cold water because you will have power".
