Fiji's Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, says it is considering relocating its embassy, after a mob of PNG soldiers stormed the Defence Building in Port Moresby, which also houses the chancery.
Truck and bus loads of soldiers stormed the building last week, over protests of the Defence Force Retirement Benefit Fund. Fiji Times reports Ratu Inoke as saying, the current location is now considered unsafe for its foreign mission. While local staff of the mission and other tenants, including an international organization and a foreign mission were evacuated, head of the Fiji mission High Commissioner Romanu Tikotikoca told his diplomats to remain in the chancery, insisting on their safety and sovereignty of the Fiji mission in the event there was violence. The PNG Defence Council has ordered an investigation into the incident, condemning the actions as uncalled for. Meantime, PNG Defence Force Chief of Staff Colonel Mark Goina says, he's met with disgruntled members of the First Royal Pacific Island Regiment last week, over protest of their Retirement Benefit Funds. Relaying a decision by the PNG Defence Council to investigate the storming of the Comrade Trustees Services office, Minister Fabian Pok says, an investigation is underway to find and deal with those responsible. Colonel Goina says he met with the soldiers at Taurama Barracks last Friday. "I've done so, and the members have been fully briefed, in relation to the status of this review. "Questions they raised were also answered, and they were happy with the answers I gave," Colonel Goina said. Comments are closed.
