Papua New Guinea has all the basic requirements for a motor vehicle assembly plant to be established.
And one of the world’s leading motor vehicle manufacturer, Toyota Corporation of Japan, has been informally asked to consider establishing a plant here. Transport and Infrastructure Minister William Duma made this suggestion when congratulating Ela Motors at the opening of a new state-of-the-art showroom at Waigani on Tuesday night. Mr Duma said PNG has the natural gas which provides the basic ingredient for vehicle components, the energy for the assembly plant, the right location in the middle of the Pacific and the Asian regions, smart and hardworking Papua New Guineans, stable political environment and comparatively low labour costs. Mr Duma said Ela Motors just celebrated its 50 years of operations in PNG last year and now it has invested more money in constructing this new showroom. “The event confirms the commitment by Ela Motors to continue to invest in PNG, starting with the establishment of the first Automotive Training Centre in Port Moresby soon after independence in 1977, the refurbishment of the Badili Showroom in 2006, the establishment of the Badili Hino Truckshop in 2013, the establishment of the Ela Apprentice Academy in 2013, a specifically designed program and facilities for 50 apprentices in 2013, and assistance to important health programs such as Operation Open Heart, Cancer Relief Society, Buk Bilong Pikinini, City Mission, Digicel Foundation, and many others.” He further stated that the decision by Ela Motors to invest in the new Waigani showroom is a strong statement of confidence in the people of PNG and the Government led by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill. “Let me say that despite the usual politicking that will continue, the PNG Government under the leadership of Prime Minister O’Neill will continue with its effort to provide strong leadership and a stable regulatory and policy environment in PNG for businesses to prosper.” The showroom will showcase world class brand new Toyota products as well as Yamaha products to meet marine customers’ needs. It is also the first one of its kind in PNG. Comments are closed.
