Police in Western will be cracking down on people from other parts of the country entering the province and conducting illegal businesses with locals.
This follows the sentencing of three men by the National Court in Daru for drug smuggling. The trio were sentenced to two years each for smuggling drugs onto the island town. According to police reports, the three were intercepted by Police at Toro Passage, about 4 kilometers from the island during a routine patrol. The had in their possession 9 bags of marijuana weighing more than 100 kilograms, that would have cost more than 500-thousand Australian Dollars, if it was transported onto the Torres Strait Islands in Northern Queensland. The drugs are believed to be transported down from the Highlands region, via Kikori in Gulf province, then into Daru using dinghies. After the Daru national court convicted the three men,the exhibits were then destroyed and burnt. The Daru police have identified the trading chain for drugs and will be seriously cracking down on those coming into the province from the other parts of the country involved in doing these illegal businesses including the locals as well. It is evident that in the past years people used the air transport to bring in the drugs but now have resorted to water transport using dinghies when bringing bags of betelnuts out from the Gulf province.
