The National Weather Office has predicted that PNG should expect El Nino conditions sometimes this year.
Director of the National Weather Service Samuel Maiha says indications by the sea surface temperature in Manus, shows that it is moving east towards Kavieng from the Bismarck Sea. Mr. Maiha said the movement of the warm air is triggered by cyclones and in this instance, it was Tropical Cyclone Ita. He also adds that experts from the Meteorological Bureau in the United States, predict that it is likely to continue its movement towards the East Pacific along the coast of South America. He said the increase in the sea surface temperature in this area will also be accompanied by increased rainfall. Maiha said, the likely favourable condition for this movement would be a tropical cyclone in Fiji sometime this year. He pointed out that despite the country being hard hit by El Nino in 1997, it has yet to set up an agency to deal with such natural disasters. He said this is a major concern and relevant government authorities like the national Disaster and Emergency and weather offices, the defence Force and other stakeholders, need to work together to prepare for the likely dry spell.
