A third year student at Divine Word University who was stabbed last Thursday by settlers from Gav Stua (Government Store) has died. The student who is understood to be of mixed Morobe and Sepik parentage and who was enrolled with the Art Faculty died yesterday (Friday) afternoon at the Modilon General Hospital. His body is now at the hospital morgue. News of his death has not just sent shock waves through the university campus but sparked fighting between angry students who had set on the neighboring compound. Provincial Police Commander Chief Superintendent Sylvester Kalaut, DWU President Fr Jan Czuba and hospital authorities could not be reached for comment at the time this report was filed. However, sources said the area outside the campus to have turned into a war zone as fighting raged between the two groups late afternoon and into the night. They said police had arrived on site and had managed to bring the situation under control. Several students and residents of the compound had reportedly been injured and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment as both groups had gone into battle armed with weapons of sorts. Sources also revealed Chief Supt Kalaut and Madang Governor had also turned up at the campus where they had with Fr Jan Czuba had addressed the students and later also met with leaders from Gav Stua leaders. Sources said the leaders to have appealed for calm among the students and for them not to take the law into their own hands while they had told the leaders of Gav Stua to ensure the perpetrators are handed over to police to be dealt with Meanwhile it is understood the fighting continued this morning at six am and despite police being dispatched into the area.The situation is reportedly tense and police to be monitoring the situation closely.
