While Brazil has been hardest hit by the Zika virus, the National Department of Health (NDoH) is yet to advice hospitals, ports, and borders on measures to be carried out on the Zika virus. Provincial hospitals around the country are taking a pro-active measure carrying out their own forms of awareness to inform the General Public on the Zika virus. Sister Orpah Tugo CEO for Daru Hospital has confirmed that Daru Hospital will carry out its own awareness and they have already enlisted a civilian officer who is currently putting together a plan of action for Daru Hospital staff to educate the public on the mosquito borne virus, and prevention measures to take. Sister Tugo said “The World Health Organization (WHO) has already sent a representative to the town and rural areas to educate the rural population while we wait for NDoH to give a directive the age old adage prevention is better than cure is true when it comes to Zika and Daru Hospital will carry out the awareness wherever they can in markets and at various locations”. No vaccines exist for the Zika Virus disease however avoid mosquito bites, and mosquito carrying Zika bite during the daytime they also spread dengue and chikungunya viruses. The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis (red eyes). Other common symptoms include muscle pain and headache. The incubation period (the time from exposure to symptoms) for Zika virus disease is not known, but is likely to be a few days to a week.
