Eleven people are dead and eight are fighting for their lives at the Daru General Hospital in Western Province.
Ten of them died at the Daru General Hospital, after being brought in to Daru last night, while one died back in the village. All the affected people are from the Nanawete Tribes Region of the Fly River District. According to unconfirmed reports reaching NBC say, the deaths are from cyanide poisoning. Edward Miniel from NBC Western said, he has spoken to the leaders from the area who have confirmed, the 10 people were brought in last night at around nine o'clock and died yesterday. "I was tipped off from Port Moresby of mysterious sickness in the Nanaweta Tribes Region of the Fly River. And late in the afternoon at 5-pm I met up with the health worker from Keapopo Health Centre. I was told that ten people were rushed to the Daru hospital from Madiri Village. Ten people have died. Eight people are now fighting for life in the Intensive care unit." South Fly District Health team has been mobilized and will be leaving for the area tomorrow to conduct tests.
