One of the country's bio diversity conservation area is under threat of a mining activity.
Crater area, in Eastern Highlands province was declared a wildlife management area in 1993, however an awarding of mining license might pose threat to the wildlife. Crater Gold Mining Limited has 180 square kilometres of exploration licences in and around Crater Mountain. And, it says the area could be PNG's next large-scale copper and gold resource and it wants to fast-track mining in the reserve to fund development. But conservation groups say mining will have a "dramatic" impact on wildlife and rivers in the area. Robert Bino, from the Research and Conservation Foundation of PNG, says mining also kills off forest-based businesses. He says some tourists come to Crater because of wildlife in the forest and experience village life with the people And that there's mining in Crater, it may affect the potential to attract tourists.
