THE national Court in Mt Hagen has stopped three American Enga-based missionaries from being deported.
This order is in force until an outcome of the review of their deportation ordered by Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Rimbink Pato last month. The stay order was obtained by a lawyer representing the missionaries, Veronica Yobone Randy, of the Yobone & Co Lawyers before Justice Goodwin Poole in Mt Hagen on Friday. The three American Lutheran missionaries who are based at the Immanuel Lutheran Hospital facilities in Wapenamanda, Enga Province: Anton Lutz, Julia Dayle Lutz and Reverend Jeff Horn, had been ordered to leave Papua New Guinea by Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Rimbink Pato but Prime Minister Peter O’Neill had intervened, asking for a review of the deportation order. Before the court order was issued, the Gutnius Lutheran Church followers in Enga and the general public in the province and elsewhere opposed Mr Pato’s decision to the extent that the Prime Minister ordered an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deportation. Enga Governor Peter Ipatas, who welcomed the review. GLC secretary David Ezekiel has also welcomed the court decision, saying justice must be seen to be done to the missionaries who left their comfort zones to come to Papua New Guinea to help "our unfortunate people" in the rural areas.
