The National Government is placing more emphasis on the work of Village Court Officials and Land Mediators in rural communities and will put them on its payroll next January.
Minister for Justice and Attorney General Kerenga Kua revealed this when opening the Community Justice Service Centre at Lumi station in the Aitape/Lumi District of West Sepik. Mr. Kua says, for too long the government has robbed the people of its labour, as the Village Court Officials, Land Mediators and Peace Officers were getting only 12 Kina fortnightly. However, he says this will change, with 150-million Kina, earmarked for Village Court Officials salary, in the 2014 budget. "Mupela nau empawarim yupla ol village kot magistrate na ofis blo upla. "Yumi save gat too much expectation long ol village kot magistrate, ol councillors. "Long haus-lain, ol iwok at considerable risk long life blo ol. "Ol i westim plenti family time long wok for nothing. "Long Parliament mi, tok for too long the government has robbed the labour of it's own people, under the guise and protection of the law. "Bai yupela kisim pay blong yupla direct long Waigaini. "Mipla bai treatim yu olsem public servant because you are a public servant. "Your office is created by law," Mr. Kua said.
