The Correctional Service Minister Jim Simatab says close to 300 prisoners are on the run throughout the country, following mass jail breakouts, which plagued PNG in 2013. Minister Simatab says this must be the highest priority of Acting Commissioner Michael Waipo as the new Departmental Head. Beon Jail in Madang, Lae's Buimo, Barawagi Jail in Mount Hagen, Mendi's Buiebi Jail, Popondetta's Biru Jail and Goroka's Bihute Jail including PNG's prime Bomana prison in Port Moresby, have all suffered, mass breakouts last year. The late Commissioner Balthazer has admitted 2013 to be the darkest for the Correctional Service, while Minister Simatab has described the situation as an indication of a lack of command and control. Acting Commissioner Waipo is appealing to the public to assist authorities identify and recapture those prisoners, saying the CS has no definite recapture plans, because their roles are confined to guarding prisons. Mr. Waipo however says they can assist agencies like the police share intelligence and other information that can help lead to recapturing the escapees. Comments are closed.
