THE Ark Peace hospital ship arrived on Thursday morning in Port Moresby to a Chinese traditional lion dance, a traditional Morobe dance and the Royal PNG Constabulary police band welcome.
A small group of Chinese community were also at the wharf flying PNG and Chinese flags. Welcoming the mission commander Rear Admiral Shen Hao and the medical ship and its crew of more than 300, Health Minister Michael Malabag thanked the Chinese for their continued friendship and assistance through various programs. Impressed by the ships goodwill visit and its medical team which will provide services for the people in Port Moresby, Mr Malabag said the arrival of floating hospital takes the relationship between PNG and China to the next level. He said he also appreciated the work of the Chinese medical team already in PNG working on a two-year program at Port Moresby General Hospital. Chinese ambassador Li Ruiyou said the ship will provide humanitarian medical services in Port Moresby with the aim to strengthen bilateral medical cooperation and friendship. PNGDF chief of staff Mark Goina said he looked forward to the medical services that will be provided at the Taurama Military Hospital on top of the services to the public. Admiral Shen Hao, through a translator, said his medical team was prepared to give high quality medical service to nations and at the same time enhancing peace, stability in Pacific Island countries. He said his team was happy to provide these services to PNG. Mr Malabag, Lt-Col Goina and the media were given a brief about the work of the medical ship and were shown around various treatment rooms or wards. The tour included the eye clinic, laboratory, ultrasound room, disinfectant and supply room, Chinese traditional medicine room, information centre, intensive care unit, operating room and emergency room.
