The State of Emergency in the Porgera mining township of Enga province began on Friday, with locals urged to cooperate with disciplinary forces, to curb illegal mining activities and other law and order issues.
Code-named, 'Shot Stop', the Call Out Operations will see police and military personnel ,based at the mine site for three months. Porgera Mining Operator, Barrick Gold called for Government's intervention, after facing problems with illegal miners for some time now. Local M-P, Nixon Mangape urged those mining illegally, to stop and further urged people from other Districts, to move out of the mining site. Mr. Managape further called on his people to surrender their illegal firearms and minimize the ongoing tribal fights, continuously disrupting peace in the District and Province. Enga Provincial Administrator, Samson Amean, in welcoming Government's quick response through the Call Out Operation, also urged for locals cooperation, during a parade by the members of the police and defence forces, on Friday.
