The Manus island detention center is expected to be high on the agenda for Australian foreign minister Julie Bishop during her two day trip to Papua New Guinea.
Julie Bishop is today meeting Papua New Guinea's prime minister Peter O''neil and foreign affairs minister, Rimbik Pato. Its likely the detention center on Manus island will be high on agenda. Last week, PNG's supreme court ruled the country's opposition leader did have the right to challenge the constitutional validity of detaining asylum seekers on Manus island but the case has a long way to go. Some on the remote northern have complained that Australian funded development projects are not happening fast enough but the Australian officials say more than 500 locals are employed and locals contractors are earning 230 thousand dollars a week providing goods and services to the regional processing centre.
