Deputy Opposition Leader, Sam Basil, has asked relevant bodies to start auditing costs incurred for infrastructure projects such as bridges.
He said this while inspecting an eighteen-meter bridge being built by a Chinese company at a cost of five hundred thousand kina. The Wau-Bulolo MP says proper measures have to be taken before funding infrastructure such as bridges. He said this while inspecting an 18 meter bridge in Patep yesterday. Mr. Basil says some bridges in the Highlands like the Wasa Bridge in Kandep have cost millions for their construction, with money still being spent. “Some of these bridges are K10 million, some are K15 million, the Wasa bridge of Kandep… will cost K40 million,” he said. The inflated cost of infrastructure around the country is the result of scoping done by Engineers and other parties involved. Sam Basil again draws attention to the Engineering Institute of PNG who are tasked to carry out technical audits. “The cost of infrastructure means the Engineering Institute or Engineering club should look into costing because some of the figures employed by Ministers for their electorate is just way too much,” he said. About three months ago the Engineering Institute of PNG had staged a workshop in Lae for technical audit techniques and they said technical audits were never done in the past. The workshop will hopefully put the relevant bodies in a position to reduce the amount of money being spent on road and bridge constructions. Comments are closed.
