Delivery of babies at all aid posts, health centres and hospitals should be free of charge.
Secretary for Health, Pascoe Kase said this while dispelling rumours that the Port Moresby General hospital has been charging certain amount of fees to pregnant women and girls. NBC News was informed the hospital has been charging 300 Kina per mother to deliver their babies. Mr Kase says health facilities imposing delivery fees will be held accountable under the new Free Health Care policy which will become effective as of tomorrow. He says PNG is ranked as the having highest maternal deaths and the new policy intends to encourage mothers to go to the hospitals and conceive their babies. "Supervision of delivery is one of the areas that we find mothers are not accessing hospital because of these fees. "No hospital in this country will be charging fees under the new policy. "If there is a hospital in the country that intends to charge fees, then it is against the law. "Delivery of mothers of their babies, is free of charge in all levels of facilities," Mr. Kase said.
