NATIONAL Capital District police last week arrested an Australian man for alleged stealing and false pretence.
Chris Saddler, 50, from the Sunshine Coast in Australia, was picked up by the NCD fraud squad for allegedly defrauded a local accountant to obtain K80,000 in 2012 to use as support funding to kickstart what he (Saddler) described as "government related infrastructure projects". When confirming the arrest last Thursday, the NCD and Central command reported that Saddler had been evading police for some time after the matter was brought forward by the complainant. From a police brief last week, the accused on November 11, 2012, was reported to have visited the accountant’s office at Ori Lavi Haus in Boroko and collected a bank cheque valued at K80,000 upon his word that in two weeks he would pay back the money with a K20,000 interest. Saddler was reported to have made the commitment to repay after he was paid some millions of kina from the Department of Works for infrastructure projects he was involved in. Police said attempts by the accountant, which took a year and three months, to get his money back from Saddler had been unsuccessful after which he reported the matter to police.
