The National Parliament in May last year amended the Criminal Code that effectively raised the penalties of a number of serious offences, including rape. These amendments to the Criminal Code were passed by Parliament after a public outcry.
The amendments were described by Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill at that time as draconian laws to curb and deter the ever increasing law and order problem in Papua New Guinea. The amendments to the Criminal Code that are now in force are new section 347c – aggravated rape, which will attract the death penalty. The new amendments have been gazetted and the courts will be applying these new laws on offenders. Capital punishment is legal in PNG, but has not been imposed for over 20 years.
