The recent mass retirement of Air Niugini pilots is due to lifestyle, health, age and other reasons, but not so much on pay restructure issues.
This is from Air Niugini Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Simon Foo when responding to questions regarding what the national flag carrier is doing to address the current shortage of pilots. Less than 30 pilots, including 5 nationals have moved on and the airliner is now in the process of recruiting new pilots with advertisements already out. The shortage has to some extent affected the flight services of the airliner, but they are managing the situation carefully at this time. Adding to this are also other factors affecting their services. “Weather conditions, airport infrastructure and aircraft technical issues have affected the operations to some extent,” Foo said. Meantime, the CEO says the most talked about review of Pilots’ salaries is part of the total rationalisation program of the airliner, including terms and conditions of employment of all employees following the downturn in business after the construction phase of the LNG Project.
