Three expatriate pilots have survived a plane crash in Madang Saturday morning.
A cargo aircraft belonging to Air Niugini was on a charter service in Madang and involved in the accident. The incident occurred around 9 o'clock am Saturday. Three expatriates pilots escaped with minor injuries when their aircraft plunged into a river at the end of the Madang airport runway. Preliminary information gathered from the crash site revealed the plane was taxing for take-off when it skidded off the edge of the runway and plunged into the narrow river just meters away from the Madang airport. Civil Aviation authorities in Madang estimated distance from the runway to the river to be about 100-metrers. Unconfirmed reports revealed the aircraft belongs to Air Niugini and was on a charter run out of Madang with cartons of cigarettes from the British American Tobacco Factory. CAA, BAT and Air Niugini officials who are at the site was tight lipped about the situation. BAT's Tony Smith was unable to give the amount of cigarettes lost until after permanent investigations are complete. Comments are closed.
