“With the opening of the new Pacific International Hospital last Friday the 13th of February, it marks a new beginning to take health care in PNG to another level.”
Officially opened by the Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, this is a significant development in national medical standards. That was the word from the PIH Deputy Chairman Dr Mathias Sapuri in an interview with this newsroom. It is understood that the new PIH structure will be an equivalent level 7 hospital, which is on par with the Port Moresby General Hospital. “Personally, as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the specialist clinic, I am very much looking forward to the new era in women’s health.” “This now means there will be quality, obstetric care that is up to the equivalent of Australian standards.” Dr Sapuri added that women’s health care standards in our country are in drastic need of an upgrade and this will be addressed in some ways by the opening of the new PIH. “Our new facility will be carrying our pap smears with results attainable in the next 24-48 hours.” “Moreover, new equipment and machines such as the MRI’s and 2 new cat machines means faster diagnosis for cancer in the country, which will further enable treatment in the early stages.” Dr Sapuri further stated that he also envisioned future IVF treatment for couples in our country who are facing fertility issues. “Overall, it is an exciting era and there is a brighter future ahead for women’s health in the country with such technological advancements and equipment.” PNG Facts/PNGVillage
