Acting Commissioner Kauba directs immediate investigation into Wewak police rape allegation12/12/2013
Acting Police Commissioner Simon Kauba has directed an immediate investigation into the alleged rape of a 16 year old girl by Wewak-based policemen and the alleged unlawful detention of a woman activist at the Wewak Police Station recently.
Acting Commissioner Kauba said these are very seriousallegations and will be thoroughly investigated. Senior police officers from Port Moresby and Lae, Morobe Province will be carrying out the investigation. Acting Assistance Commissioner Crimes, Chief Superintendent Donald Yamasombi and a team of three detectives will be flying immediately into Wewak to investigate these allegations. Two of the detectives are from the Crimes Directorate whilst one is from the Police Internal Affairs Directorate. “I have also directed the Momase Divisional Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner Nema Mondiai to be in Wewak to take control of the situation. “I am shocked and concerned about the allegations and assure the public, especially the East Sepik people that both allegations will be investigated thoroughly. “I will have no hesitation in taking the appropriate action against my policemen, either administratively, criminally or both if the allegations are confirmed by the investigators. PNG is a democratic country with established laws, rules and regulations. The fundamental role of the police is to protect and serve our people. “Policemen and women are required to discharge their policing duties and responsibilities without fear, favour, malice or ill-will and within the boundaries of our law so you can be rest assured that anyone who steps out of line will be dealt with severely,” Acting Commissioner Kauba concluded.
