One of the man who allegedly involved in the robbery of a yacht belonging to Australian billionaire Kerry Stokes in Madang has surrended to Police in Madang. This happened after his community leaders and relatives handed him over to police.
Madang acting police station commander Steven Yalamu confirmed yesterday that the 20-year-old from a village, near Madang Town, had been charged with sea piracy. His three accomplices are still on the run. Yalamu said community leaders and people from Kranget and Bilia Island villages were helping police in the investigations. “Community leaders are cooperating and police have conducted several raids on the island,” Yalamu said. The yacht was robbed on the morning of Friday, October 3, while anchored off Kangret island waiting for the arrival of the Stokes family. Police had said armed men boarded the vessel and removed valuable items such as laptops, telephones and diving gear. Yalamu said the incident had attracted much attention here and overseas because of its impact on tourism and investment in Madang. Meanwhile, Yalamy said two teenaged boys from Bilia Island village were arrested during last week’s raid in relation to another robbery. In addition, two suspects from Sisiak have been arrested for alleged kidnapping for ransom, unlawful detention, deprivation of liberty, robbery and unlawful use of a motor vehicle. The offences were linked to the assault on Ramu Nickel executive Gu Yuexiang in June last year. In another case, a man was arrested at Yabob for the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl.
