A former Australian soldier employed as a security guard at the Manus refugee centre in Papua New Guinea has been deported after allegedly assaulting local hotel staff, police say.
Manus acting police commander David Yapu said yesterday: “The expatriate just grabbed two whisky (bottles) and cigarette packets and stormed out of a hotel in Lorengau. And when the local staff went after him, he assaulted them. “He then drove out in a car at high speed and crashed into the mangroves at Loniu village. After abandoning the car, he went to the Lombrum asylum camp. “We went to arrest him and the camp management gave us his medical report saying he is suffering from post-traumatic syndrome disease from serving in a war zone, probably Afghanistan. “The management then deported him to Australia the next day.” Yapu questioned how the man was employed in the first place if he had that medical condition. “And now he has escaped PNG laws when he should have been charged for assault, stealing and reckless driving,” he said. Meanwhile, Manus MP Ronny Knight said it was not the first time an expatriate staff at the centre had to be deported after breaking PNG laws. “Some expatriate guards were flown out the next day after allegedly gang raping a local woman this year,” he said. Knight said some expatriate guards involved in a brawl at a hotel this year were also flown out the next day before PNG police could question them.
