This was raised during a stakeholder workshop hosted by Newcrest Mining Ltd in Port Moresby today.
New crest says the oil and gas sector, especially the big LNG project is pulling away their skilled workers that they train and this is putting a strain on them financially, when it comes to training more new local workforce.
“Most the employees trained in handling high tech operations in the mine have moved on leaving a big cap and having implications on operations,” said Newcrest Process Plant Manager, Mr. Phil Connolly says.
This matter has also been set back a little bit with the process of processing work visas for foreign skilled workers to work in the mine to boost the number of skilled workforce.
They are now working closely with the Immigration Department to strike up a win-win situation regarding short term work visas for foreign workers.
Despite this he says the movement of their trained skilled employees to the oil and gas sector is a complement to their high level training of workers and their contribution to the training of the country’s workforce.
