Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill has officially opened the new Motukea port facilities outside of Port Moresby.
The new port that cost K800 million for the land will now see the relocation of the main Port Moresby wharf at Fairfax harbor and all the port services to the new location. "I know that we could have made these decisions so many years ago when it was first moved by the former Prime Minister late Sir William Skate some 20 years. "Somehow, along the line we make silly decisions but now we have a very positive move since making the decision to relocate port to Motukea in 2013 and it has taken us another two years to get it approved and done. "That is why governments continue to miss opportunities. When there are business opportunities on the table, we must make decisions on a timely manner because time costs money. "It would have cost the Government K100 million at that time but it has gone over almost K700 million because we continuously make silly mistakes,” Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said this is not the only decision but over the years, the country is littered with these kinds of silly decisions. "This Government is trying to correct the mistakes of the past, trying to build infrastructures that has been neglected for so long. "The demand of the business community is there but the governments have not been able to keep up these demands and as a result we will continue to pay much higher prices when are trying to build infrastructures in the country. "We are not doing this only in Port Moresby but the Government is trying to build infrastructures around the country. "There is a change of many lives Papua New Guineans taking place and people should appreciated what the Government is doing at the moment" said Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill. Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill thanked Public Enterprise and State Investments Minister Ben Micah, Independent Public Business Corporation (IPBC) and all the stakeholders for the good work they have done in ensuring that this particular transaction was concluded. "I also thank the Health Minister and member for Moresby Northwest, Michael Malabag and the traditional landowners past and present whose land we are here today, thank you very much for your support."
